Ski 2 Sea Race
April 19 , 2009

With dry weather and an extended bike course, the 2009 Ski To Sea was shaping into another inevitable battle for supremacy between rival teams Fresh Air Experience Open Team and the Total Restoration Cycling Team.  In addition, a couple of new teams (XC Okanagan Elite and The Bike Barn) were hoping to fight their way to the top.  Despite almost the entire team racing at the Walla Walla Stage race, they scrambled to find athlete and ensure they had a good shot at keeping the title.

Leading the team in the first uphill/downhill ski leg was Trevor Haaheim who also decided to do double duty and complete the 15 km running leg.  Following Trevor (the first time) was Salmon Arm x-c skier Brian May, followed by Carlos Capela on the Mountain bike, followed by Cory Forrest on the road bike, followed by Trevor Haaheim on the run who would hand off to Bellingham paddlers Brian Boatman and Morris Arthur.

Trevor set a blistering first leg pace and blew everyone else away by giving Brian a 90 second lead for the x-c ski leg.  Brian skied strong and put in another 25 seconds over the F.A.E. team giving Carlos a 2 minute lead on the mountain bike.  Carlos rode a solid race on an extended MTB course, although conceded 2.5 minutes to a very strong rival competitor, giving the F.A.E team a 30 second lead heading onto the extended road bike leg.  Cory was able to make up the time and put another 2.5 minutes into their rivals giving Trevor a solid 2:25 lead going into the run.  Despite being a little tired from the first leg, Trevor ran an excellent race keeping a 1.5 minute lead over a hard charging F.A.E. runner.  Brian and Morris paddled they’re way into victory with the end gap being 1:16 giving the team it’s 4th victory in the past 5 years.
